Why Joining the Good Life Alliance Matters for the Future of Care in Wales
Across Wales, a growing group of organisations and individuals is calling for change in how people with learning disabilities and autistic people are supported. The goal is simple: everyone should be able to live in their communities, close to their families, with the support they need to live well.
The Good Life Alliance’s Senedd Manifesto 2026 sets out a clear vision. Too many people are currently placed far from home in long-stay hospitals or institutions, which can be harmful and isolating. Families often feel unheard, and gaps in local services, housing, and coordinated support make things even harder. This also costs public resources more than providing good local support would.
A spokesperson for the Alliance said:
“Families have described their sons and daughters as having had their lives stolen. This is why urgent action is needed to bring people back home and build the right support locally.”
The manifesto focuses on three main priorities:
- Bring people home and prevent unnecessary placements – keeping people close to their communities and families.
- Develop local homes and services – creating safe, welcoming places where people can live independently.
- Simplify funding – making it easier to deliver support without bureaucratic barriers.
For Ategi, joining the Alliance is an important step. It allows us to work with others across Wales to influence policy, share our experience, and help make sure that people with learning disabilities and autistic people get the support they deserve in their communities.
“Real change will only happen if organisations come together to push for a system that puts people before processes,” the spokesperson added.
By joining forces, the Alliance and its partners aim to create a national mission that improves quality of life, protects human rights, and builds sustainable community-based solutions.
We all have a role to play. Supporting this work means helping to create a Wales where everyone can live safely, independently, and as part of their community.
