Pip, Paula & Patch
Paula has been a Shared Lives carer for over 22 years. Over that time, she’s supported several people, helping them live independently from her home. For the past 13 years, she’s shared her life with Pip, who’s become an important part of her family.
Alongside Paula is her cousin Patch, who is Pip’s Short Breaks carer. The two work closely together, offering Pip consistency, stability and the chance to try new things.
Life with Pip
Pip lives a busy life filled with activities, friends and creativity. Every Tuesday, she attends her long-running Tuesday Club, where she takes part in arts and crafts, and joins in the annual themed concert.
“This year’s show was all about different countries,” says Paula. “They had New Zealand, Hawaii, Mexico — Pip loved it, especially when they did the Haka.”
At home, Pip enjoys colouring, crafts and decorating her space. She recently made a lamp for Halloween and has a growing collection of artwork she’s proud of.
Shared Support
Paula and Patch work as a team. Pip spends time with Patch on Thursdays and during holidays, giving her the chance to travel and take part in new experiences.
“They’ve been to London to see Elvis, to Downton Abbey, to Bath,” says Paula. “They go to Zumba charity shows and always have a great time. They just get on so well.”
The shared care arrangement gives Pip variety and independence, while Paula and Patch stay in close contact to make sure her support is consistent and well-coordinated.
A Strong Connection
Paula first met Pip when she was offering additional support through Shared Lives. When Pip’s previous carer retired, she asked if she could move in with Paula — and Paula agreed.
“It all happened quite quickly,” she says. “But I’d made Pip a promise, and I wanted to keep it. I’m glad I did — we’ve built a really good life together.”
Their days follow a steady routine. Pip enjoys helping with shopping, Paula helps Pip manage her money, and choosing what to wear. “She’s very sociable,” Paula says. “Everyone knows her when we go out. She’s friendly and easy-going.”
Recently, they even decided to cut down on chocolate together. “We’ve swapped it for fruit,” Paula laughs. “Peaches and nectarines are our new favourites.”
Support from Ategi
Paula values the ongoing support from Ategi.
“If I ever need advice or just someone to talk to, they’re there,” she says. “It makes a big difference knowing there’s help if I need it.”
After more than two decades as a carer, Paula says the role still feels worthwhile. “You get to see people grow in confidence and live life their way,” she says. “That’s what it’s all about.”
