Disability Action Plan: Marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities
For International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), we wanted to address the recently announced Disability Action Plan which offers a vital opportunity for reflection and action. The plan sets out practical steps to improve the lives of disabled people in the UK, addressing key issues such as accessibility, employment opportunities, and representation in leadership.
At Ategi, we know that meaningful inclusion goes beyond removing physical barriers—it’s about changing perceptions, increasing understanding, and empowering disabled people to shape their futures, their way. We’ve seen firsthand how inclusive design, like that explored in the Streets for Diversity project, can make public spaces more welcoming for everyone. This approach aligns with the government’s commitment to creating more accessible public spaces, including emergency planning improvements and inclusive playgrounds.
The plan’s emphasis on increasing disabled representation in decision-making resonates strongly with us. True inclusion ensures that disabled voices are heard and valued at every level of society—from community projects to national policy. By integrating these perspectives, we move beyond token gestures and foster environments where everyone can thrive.
The IDPD 2024 theme, “Sustainable Development: Advancing Disability Rights for an inclusive future,” emphasises that a fair, accessible society benefits everyone. By supporting disabled people in education, employment, and public life, we strengthen our communities and create a more resilient, adaptable society.
However, plans and policies are only the beginning. Implementing these changes requires a collective effort rooted in community-led approaches, where those with lived experience have the opportunity to shape the support they receive. We believe strongly in creating spaces where disabled individuals can share their insights, needs, and solutions, ensuring that their voices are central to how services and policies are designed.

This IDPD, we invite everyone to reflect on what true inclusion looks like and how we can all play a part in building a future where no one is left behind.
